Nov. 22, 2011 Board Meeting Summary

Administrative Appointment
The Board approved the appointment of Wendy Harmon, currently a math teacher at Copper Hills High School, appointed math consultant in the Curriculum Department.

CAFR Accepted
The Board accepted the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 2011.  Ray Bartholomew and Paul Winward of the auditing firm Squire & Company, PC, said the District’s financial statements conform with state and federal accounting principles.  Because of this, the firm has issued an unqualified opinion (clean opinion) that the statements given to the Board accurately reflect the business that has taken place this past year.  The auditors reminded the Board that there are new standards that will be coming for the next year and asked the Board to be proactive on those changes.

Celebrating Butterfield Canyon Elementary School
Principal Shelly Davis shared with the Board some of the programs taking place at Butterfield Canyon Elementary. Through the Response-to-Intervention program, the school has seen increases in math and reading scores in one year. The program has also helped teachers to improve their teaching methods in the classroom.

Review of Calendars
The Board reviewed the proposed year-round and traditional calendars for the 2012-15 school years.

Student Appeal
The Board accepted the student appeal as discussed in closed session.

Dr. Patrice A. Johnson, Superintendent of Schools, reported on the secondary parent teacher conferences. She explained how teams are meeting and discussing methods to increase parent participation particularly in the high school level conferences.  She then invited principals Barbara Yost, Foothills Elementary, and Michele Daly, Southland Elementary, to speak to the Board on their recent trip to China as part of an exchange program established to better prepare schools that participate in the Chinese immersion program.  She also invited Laura Finlinson to speak to the Board about how the Curriculum Department is implementing fine arts and physical education in the District.  She shared opportunities students have in drama, dance, music, visual arts, physical education and health.
