
- Administrative Reassignments
The Board approved two administrative reassignments: - Stacy Evans, currently Human Resources Administrative Secondary Recruiter, reassigned as assistant principal at Herriman High School.
- Michael Glenn, currently Information Systems Project Coordinator, reassigned as assistant principal at Herriman High School.
- National Board Certified Teachers Recognized
The Board recognized five educators who recently earned National Board Certification or Re-Certification: - Nathan Spofford, Oakcrest Elementary School, National Board Certification
- Amy Cowin, Riverton High School, National Board Certification
- Donna Hunter, Riverton High School, National Board Re-Certification
- Debbie Miller, Southland Elementary School, National Board Certification
- Pam Su'a, District Office/Curriculum and Staff Development, National Board Re-Certification
- In order to receive National Board Certification, teachers complete a portfolio showing their skill in planning and delivering instruction, student assessment, working with families, school and communities. Certification includes completing six content tests demonstrating knowledge of the subjects taught. Educators re-certify every 10 years.
- Public Hearing: Boundary Changes for Joel P. Jensen, Elk Ridge Middle Schools
Anthony Godfrey, Assistant Superintendent of the Bingham K-12 Feeder System, and Bevan Wasden, Assistant Superintendent of the West Jordan K-12 Feeder System, presented a boundary realignment involving Joel P. Jensen and Elk Ridge Middle Schools. The presentation was reflective of public input that was gathered at two open houses and from an online survey on the District Web site. The Administration recommended the Board adopt option D. This option most effectively balances the boundary student population for both schools. The Board will vote on the boundary proposal at its Feb. 9 meeting. - Parent Shannon Wright encouraged the Board to review option A, taking into consideration the number of students who permit out of Elk Ridge and help balance the school’s enrollment.
- Parent Ben Bolduc asked the Board to consider starting over. He believes the recommended option does not take into account patron comments.
Taxing Entity Committee Membership
The Board appointed J. Dale Christensen and Business Administrator Burke Jolley to represent Jordan School District on all redevelopment, economic development, and community development project areas located within the District. Carmen Freeman and Richard Osborn were appointed to serve as alternate members of this committee.
Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Newbold commended the District’s Career and Technical Education program, its eight areas of study and the 34,000 students enrolled in the programs.
Celebrating Daybreak Elementary School
Daybreak Elementary School, which opened in 2005 on a year-round schedule, has an enrollment of 900 students. Principal Doree Strauss highlighted the planned implementation of the "Community of Caring" Project, a nationally recognized program to ehance character education.
- Patron Comments
- Jennifer Alozian, a teacher at Silver Crest Elementary School, asked the Board to consider the current low morale of teachers in the District and suggested many of the proposed budget suggestions have a detrimental effect on teachers and classrooms.
- Parent Camille Jensen encouraged the Board to remember the children before eliminating programs. She asked the Board to fulfill its responsibility to raise taxes to its original proposed amount from last fall.
- Alisa Jones, a parent from Monte Vista Elementary School, encouraged the Board to raise taxes in order to minimize the cuts on the classroom.
- Alexandra Eframo recommend the Board create a non-partisan committee over ethics.
- Doug Livingston encouraged the Board to closely review whether the community will support a tax increase to maintain a strong District.
- Parent Randy Jensen asked the Board to consider a tax increase and cut only the expenses that do not impact children directly.
- Rebekeh Peterson expressed her willingness to support a tax increase.
- Kirsten Wilcox, a teacher at Daybreak Elementary School, expressed her support for a tax increase. She thanked the Board for its service and encouraged it to be considerate of the morale of the teachers.
- Board Comments
- Carmen R. Freeman expressed his concerns that some patrons feel a tax increase alone will solve the District’s deficit. He reminded patrons that a combination of several options will be needed to balance the budget.
- Peggy Jo Kennett attended the Western Growth Coalition meeting which addresses issues involving legislation affecting the west side of Salt Lake County.
- Leah Voorhies expressed her gratitude for patron and employee comments about the budget.
- Rick Bojak thanked schools for encouraging patrons to take the budget survey.
Closed, Study Sessions
In closed session, Board members discussed personnel, property and potential litigation. During study session the Board reviewed boundary options for Elk Ridge and Joel P. Jensen Middle Schools.
