School Choice Applications (Moratorium Schools)
Jordan
District's School Choice program allows families to choose which
schools their students will attend. However, students who wish
to participate must choose a school that is not closed to additional
enrollment. Students should also adhere to the following guidelines:
- Forms are available at the schools.
- File a School Choice application at the school the student
wishes to attend between Dec. 1 and the third Friday in February.
An individual application is necessary even if a sibling has
previously enrolled at the school under the School Choice
program. (Any time oustide the choice application window a yearly school transfer application may be filled out and must be approved by both the boundary and requested school's administration.)
- Applications will be considered in the order received.
- The principal will issue as many Choice permits as classroom
space, available staff and programs permit.
- Students must remain at the Choice school during the entire
school year.
- Permits will be issued or denied by the first working day of April.
- Parents are responsible for transportation to and from
the Choice school.
- Choice permits are reviewed annually. Students already
on permit may be allowed to continue to attend moratorium schools,
subject to the same rules and standards as resident students.
- During the 2007-08 school year, the following nine schools
have been identified as "moratorium schools." Due
to increased enrollment, these schools will not accept School
Choice applications.
- The deadline for 2007-08 transfer requests is Feb. 16, 2007.

Frequently Asked Questions
What procedures must be followed in
order to receive a special permit to attend a public school
outside of the custodial parent or legal guardian's residency?
- Jordan District Students Attending Jordan District
School (But Not Their Boundary)
When a student lives in Jordan
District and wants to attend a school other than their boundary
school, they need to do so on permit. The parent/legal guardian
will need to contact the requested school to make sure they
are accepting students on permit. If the requested school agrees
to accept the student on permit, the parent/guardian needs a
signed School Transfer Request releasing the student from their
boundary school and a signature from the requested school showing
permit acceptance. When a special permit is granted, transportation
becomes the responsibility of the parent/guardian. The permit
must be renewed annually, with the receiving school, if continued enrollment is desired.
- Out of District Students
Applying to attend Jordan School District (Within Utah)
When a student's custodial
parent or legal guardian live outside of Jordan District and
desires to attend a Jordan District school, the parent/guardian
needs to contact the school requested and arrange a special
permit. Once the school has agreed to accept the student on
special permit, the parent/guardian will need a release from
their school District of residency. The release should be taken
directly to the school where the student has been accepted on
special permit. Transportation is the responsibility of the
parent/guardian. The permit must be renewed annually if continued
enrollment is desired.
- Jordan District Students
Attending Schools Outside of Jordan District
When a parent/guardian desires their student to attend a public school outside of the Jordan School District, it is necessary to be accepted on a permit at the school requested. Once acceptance has been given a parent/guardian may call the Department of Planning & Student Services at (801) 567-8183 to get a Jordan School District Release. The release can be mailed to the permit school, the parent/guardian home, or picked up by the parent/guardian. When a student is accepted on special permit to attend a school outside of Jordan District, transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. The permit must be renewed annually if continued enrollment is desired.
- Choice Permits
When a parent/guardian desires their student to attend a school other than their boundary school, they may make application under the "School Choice" Option. Applications are available Dec. 1 at those schools who have not been classified as moratorium schools. Completed applications for the next school year must be submitted to the desired school between Dec. 1 and the third Friday in February. The school will notify the applicant by April 1 as to the acceptance or denial of the application. Accepted students shall be permitted to remain enrolled in the school subject to the same rules and standards as resident students, without renewed applications in subsequent years, unless one of the following occurs: a) the student is promoted or graduates from the school; b) the student is no longer a Utah resident; c) the student is suspended or expelled from school. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.
