Daybreak School Being
Discussed
Board of Education members adopted a resolution
on May 13 granting Kennecott Land permission to enter into discussions
with the District administration to establish the commitments, roles and
responsibilities related to financial responsibilities, site selection,
development of final plans and specifications for a joint facility—elementary
school/community recreation center.
The school/recreation center will be located
in South Jordan at Kennecott’s Daybreak’s master planned community.
The school/recreation center will share space such as the kitchen, cafeteria,
gymnasium, athletic fields, parking, etc. Because of the shared space,
the District will get more facility for every dollar spent. The estimated
cost per square foot is $104, which is less than the national average
of $118.06 per square foot for an elementary school or state government
buildings in Utah that average between $115-$122 per square foot. Ms.
Wikstrom reminded the Board it will build the new school for the same
price it is building other elementary schools in the District. She said
Kennecott is not asking the District to fund any additional money for
this school. The school is scheduled to open in 2005 when approximately
1,100 homes will begin construction. The school will initially
help relieve enrollments at surrounding elementary schools including Monte
Vista and Welby.
