Superindentent's Message

The 2002-03 school year presented many challenges: expanding enrollment, increasing program costs, inadequate financial resources, unfunded new legislative mandates—challenges we continue to face this school year. I am proud of the way the District’s employees, students and parents have stepped up to these challenges.Supt. Newbold

Despite funding that ranks Utah dead last in the country, our staff continues to deliver a second-to-none education to the students of Jordan School District. We built three new schools last year and are in the process of building two more. Our Nutrition Services Department served up nearly eight million meals, including 250,000 free or reduced-price breakfasts to students from families in need. We operate our schools with the lowest administrative costs in the country. The District’s Transportation Department is improving air quality by adding new natural gas buses to its fleet. Our teachers are highly qualified, with 31 percent holding master’s degrees or higher—51 percent at the high-school level. Our students’ test scores keep improving and our high school dropout rates keep declining year after year. I could go on enumerating all the phenomenal accomplishments of our dedicated students and employees.

So, it is with great pride I present our Annual Report for the 2002-03 school year. I hope you will take the time to review this information. As you look closely, you’ll see how our employees and students met the challenges and exceeded expectations once again.

Barry L. Newbold, Ed.D., Superintendent, Jordan School District
