New Web Design Introduced
      With the new school year, the Office of Communications has launched a new look for the District Web site at www.jordandistrict.org. The site contains a wealth of information for parents as well as employees. Each school/department is encouraged to carefully review the site for any corrections or updates. Outstanding New Teacher
      Kathy Richins, pharmacy technology instructor at the Jordan Applied Technology Center, West Jordan Campus, was selected by the Association for Career and Technical Education as Outstanding New Teacher of the Year in the Health Science division. The Award was given at the Health Science Educator Conference.

District History Still Available
      There are still a few remaining copies of The First 100 Years: A History of Jordan School District available for purchase. Whether you are new to the District or a long-time employee, you will enjoy reading how, as Superintendent Barry L. Newbold writes in the book’s foreword, “District administrators, faculty, staff, students and communities joined to celebrate successes, struggled together through adversity, and consoled each other in tragedy.” The books are $5 each and can be purchased at the District Office reception desk.

Seeking Book
     Itineris Early College High (West Jordan) is seeking the book The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. If you have an extra copy, please contact Jeff Bossard, (801) 256-5943.

Social Studies Seminar
      The District’s first Saturday History Seminar for the 2006-07 school year will be Oct. 7 at Mount Jordan Middle School (Sandy). Presenters include professors from local universities and specialists in social studies teaching strategies. Registration details will be sent through history department chairs in early September. Band and Orchestra Teachers Needed
      Jordan District needs band and orchestra teachers for elementary school before- or after-school music programs. The salary is $18.26 per hour with a maximum of 17 hours per week. Please call Doug Allen, (801) 567-8088, or Cindy Hooper, (801) 567-8365, for information.

Apple and Dell Battery Recalls
      Apple computer announced last week it has recalled 1.8 million laptop batteries. The laptops affected by this recall are PowerBook G4 and iBook G4. This announcement follows a similar announcement by Dell earlier this summer. The batteries affecting both Dell and Apple laptops are made by Sony Corporation. For instructions regarding how to discover if your laptop has one of the batteries in question, and what to do to have that battery replaced, go to the curriculum technology Web page at http://t4.jordan.k12.ut.us and follow the applicable link. Aug. 15, 2006

Grant Awarded
      JoAnn Wilcox, second-grade teacher at Bluffdale Elementary, was awarded a 100% For Kids grant from the Utah Credit Union Education Foundation. The $2,556 grant will be used to create an updated math lab for the second grade.

Softball
Members of a softball team sponsored by the Transportation Department prepare for a midnight game to benefit the American Cancer Society

All-Night Softball for Cancer
      The Transportation Department sponsored a softball team in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event. Under the direction of Coach Steve Moffett, mechanic, team members participated in games through the night Aug. 11. The event concluded with a breakfast Saturday morning. The team is hoping to raise $1,000 for the American Cancer Society. If you would like to donate, contact Ron Bateman, bus driver, (801) 688-6269.

Assistance With Health Care
      The deadline for Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) applications is Sept. 1. CHIP is a state health insurance plan for children under age 19. If you are aware of students or their families who may be without health insurance or proper health care, contact Kami Ridd, Health Services Department, (801) 412-2522, or visit www.jordan.k12.ut.us/healthservices/index.

Evening for Educators: Revisiting Utah's Past
      The Utah Museum of Fine Arts will present a free “Evening for Educators” workshop Sept. 27 to help teachers use a variety of approaches to teaching art in the classroom. The workshop is geared towards teachers in all disciplines and all grade levels. At each of the Evenings for Educators, teaching packets containing images of artworks, biographies of the artists and lesson plans with across-the-curriculum lessons created by educators are available for a donation of $5. By attending five evenings (15 hours) and completing a field test teachers can receive one credit hour of in-service credit. For more information, visit www.umfa.utah.edu and click on “Education.”

Outstanding Teacher
      Cindy Mikesell, first-grade teacher at Rose Creek Elementary (Riverton), was honored as Utah’s Outstanding Teacher for 2006 by the University of Utah. The award was presented during commencement exercises for the College of Education. Mikesell has been with the District for 19 years.

Teachers of the Year
      Wal-Mart honored six Jordan District teachers in its Teacher of the Year program: Rebecca Bibo, fourth-grade teacher at Draper Elementary; Karen Bogenschutz, third-grade teacher at Elk Meadows Elementary (South Jordan); Cydnee Nelson, fourth-grade teacher at Peruvian Park Elementary (Sandy); Allison Rose, second-grade teacher at Bell View Elementary (Sandy); Colleen Shewell, second-grade teacher at Welby Elementary (South Jordan); and Susan Tenhor, third-grade teacher at Monte Vista Elementary (South Jordan). Each winning teacher received $1,000 for her school and a $100 gift card to buy classroom supplies.

Alumnus Recognition
      David Stoddard, executive director of the Riverton K-12 Feeder System, was recognized in McKay Today, alumni magazine for the David O. McKay School of Education at BYU. He is a member of the McKay School of Education Alumni Board.

Dance Festival
      On June 22, Herriman Elementary presented a student dance festival titled “100 years of Dance” in celebration of Jordan District’s centennial last school year. Students from each grade level performed dances learned in PE classes during the year.

Assisting With Health Care
      The Jordan District Health Services Department reminds teachers to be aware of students who may be without health insurance or proper health care. Through a partnership with the State of Utah, a Bureau of Eligibility Services worker for the Department of Health has an office in the Health Services Department portable building located behind Jordan Valley School (Midvale) and is able to assist families in the application process for Medicaid and CHIP. Master of Education Program
    
A Master of Education/Special Education cohort program is available to Special Education teachers through the University of Phoenix. This is a Utah State Office of Education approved alternative route to licensure (ARL) program so teachers must be employed by the District to qualify. There is limited enrollment for each cohort, with flexible start dates throughout the year.
