          The Board approved the following administrative appointments and transfer:
  • Valerie Shaw, principal of Alta View Elementary
  • Ken Westwood, principal of Bluffdale Elementary
  • Edy McGee, principal of Butler Elementary
  • Sally Sansom, principal of East Midvale Elementary
  • Carolynn Christensen, principal of Edgemont Elementary
  • Shelley Nordick, principal of Rosamond Elementary
  • Diena Riddle, principal of Copper Canyon Elementary
  • Ray Jenson, principal of Elk Ridge Middle
  • Terry Price, coordinator of Career and Technical Education
  • Catherine Stoneman, transferred as principal of Ridgecrest Elementary
  • Policy Revised
        
    The Board approved adding the following to DP311––Evaluation for Certificated Personnel:
  • An educator may request a different observation time once during the evaluation cycle.
  • On second and third evaluations, request for an outside evaluator must be submitted in writing no later than 10 working days after the professional development meeting.  The written request must be sent to the JPAS teacher specialist. 

  • Outstanding Employees
        
    The Jordan Education Foundation honored 10 individuals with the Outstanding Classified Employee of the Year Award.  Each received $1,000 from the foundation.  This year’s recipients are:
  • Alona Anderson, custodian, Crescent View Middle
  • Marjoe Back, head attendance secretary, Union Middle
  • Dale Burk, head custodian, Alta View Elementary
  • Charlotte Graham, head secretary, East Midvale Elementary
  • Sharon Gregory, administrative secretary, Office of the Superintendent
  • Raelene Henline, head secretary, Sprucewood Elementary
  • Joan Hodges, registrar, Riverton High
  • Michael Kelley, communications assistant, Office of Communications
  • Cathy Parker, hall monitor, Albion Middle
  • Johanna Wayman, lunch manager, Granite Elementary

Scout Recognized
      The Board presented Brad Jencks, a ninth-grade student at South Jordan Middle School, with a Certificate of Appreciation for service to Jordan School District for his Eagle Scout project.  He rendered more than 4,000 hours of service at the Bingham Cemetery which is owned by the Board of Education.

  • Patron Comments
  • Dan Rozanas, a teacher at Alta High, requested clarification on allowing teachers to wear JEA T-shirts during contract hours.
  • John Wunderli, a teacher at South Hills Middle, asked the Board to make teacher salaries a top priority.  In light of teacher morale and numerous retirements, he asked the Board to make a major commitment to raising salaries this coming school year.
  • Bonnie Despain, a teacher at Ridgecrest Elementary, commended those involved in negotiations.
  • Board Comments
  • Lynette Phillips reported on attendance at School Community Council meetings at Hillcrest High and Midvalley Elementary, Midvalley’s Writer’s Fest, Midvale Middle’s Unity Fair, the Administrators Social and the Board retirement dinners.
  • Randy Brinkerhoff attended an art exhibit at South Hills Middle, Herriman Elementary’s “Herriman Hits Broadway” production, and Riverton High’s School Community Council appreciation dinner.  He also commended Southland Elementary for its bullying program that utilizes middle school students.
  • Peggy Jo Kennett attended the Sister Cities luncheon, Jordan Ridge Elementary’s melodrama, a play at Mountain Shadows Elementary and the West Jordan High principal’s student recognition reception and dinner. 

Crescent Elementary
      Crescent Elementary Principal Debbie Shumard said the school has focused on reading achievement this past year in honor of the District’s Centennial and the school’s 25th anniversary.  The school’s “100 Book Challenge” encourages students to read 100 books this school year.  In addition, Trust Land and CSIP funding has paid for three paraprofessionals who tutor small groups and provide one-on-one reading in an effort to help more students read on grade level.

Closed, Study Sessions
      The Board met in closed session prior to the regular meeting to discuss property, personnel, and negotiations.  Board members also met in study session prior to the regular meeting to hear reports from the Cheerleading Task Force and Health Committee, and to review the budget.
