In accordance with Jordan School District Board approval, Herriman High is currently under construction at 11971 S. 6000 West. It will be open at the beginning of the 2010-11 school year. To facilitate the opening, boundary changes at Bingham and Riverton High Schools are anticipated in order to establish the new school boundaries.
Over the past few months, the Board of Education has established and followed a process for determining the boundaries for Herriman High School. As part of the process, patrons were given the opportunity to give their input through an online survey, four open houses, as well as a public hearing that was held. After receiving, reviewing, and summarizing all patron input, the Board voted to adopt Option A with a modification on Nov. 10, 2009. Following is a map of Option A Modified, as well as potential enrollment numbers, rationale, and legal descriptions for the recommended boundaries at Herriman, Bingham and Riverton High Schools under Option A Modified.
General Information
- Why is a new school being built by Jordan School District?
- Will students be able to permit to the school of their choice?
- Who will qualify for busing to the new school under Option A Modified?
We have outlined below some factors you may wish to consider as you review Option A Modified.
Open Enrollment Permits: An Open Enrollment permit allows a student who is living in a certain school’s boundary to enroll and attend another school who has accepted their permit request. Permits are accepted by the receiving school until that school reaches capacity in accordance with the law.
When considering the options, please remember that Bingham, Riverton and Herriman High Schools would all be able to accept open enrollment permits until they reach their capacity. Their capacity number is listed on the map. If and when capacity is reached for any of the three, no more permits would be accepted and students could no longer enroll if they lived outside the boundary of that school. Current permits would be allowed to continue through graduation. Siblings of permitted students would have no guarantee of obtaining permits.
Construction Growth Potential: Construction growth potential refers to the potential for new students to move into a school boundary because their family is building a new home there. Currently, construction growth for all three schools would be at a minimum and is projected to stay at a minimum for 3-5 years. The student numbers listed on the map do not reflect any measure of this kind of growth.
School Course/Program Potential: In a comprehensive high school, the ability to offer and schedule for a wide variety of courses and programs is to a large degree determined by the size of student enrollment. It is sometimes more difficult to offer all courses/programs others offer when a school has a small student enrollment.

- Greatest transportation cost savings ($51,000 per year)
- Greatest potential to allow all students to attend their school of choice (open enrollment permits)
- Keeps neighborhoods together
- Greatest capacity to provide a beginning student enrollment that will support programs for the new high school as well as Bingham and Riverton
- Sensitive to patron feedback
- Maximizes potential for students to attend the school closest to their home
- Gives attention to feeder systems
- Open Enrollment:
- Bingham - open
- New School - open
- Riverton - open
- Construction Growth Potential:
- Bingham – minimal growth potential
- New School – growth potential
- Riverton – growth potential
- Course/Program Offering Potential:
- Bingham – continues high
- New School – starts medium, grows quickly to high
- Riverton – continues high

Herriman High is being built to accommodate student enrollment growth. Approximately 5,600 students currently live in the combined boundaries of Bingham and Riverton High Schools, with a combined school capacity of just over 5,000. Enrollment trends indicate that even if additional students did not move into the area, the need for additional high school space will continue to increase dramatically year after year.
The funds used to build the school are from the bond approved by voters in 2003. The Board of Education for Jordan School District approved this specific project on March 25, 2008.
- According to Utah's Open Enrollment law, schools are required to accept permits until they reach their building capacity (without portables). Riverton and Herriman High Schools both have a capacity of 2,500 students, while Bingham High has a capacity of 2,557. Option A Modified brings enrollment at any of these three schools below their capacity and would create an opportunity for students to permit to that school until capacity is reached. Permits are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis during the Open Enrollment window, which runs from Dec. 1, 2009, to Feb. 19, 2010.
- The District's Transportation Department is working to establish busing routes for Herriman High. The State of Utah requires that busing be provided for high school students who live more than two miles from school. A map of the estimated "walk-in" area around Herriman High can be viewed by clicking here. Please note that this map represents an estimate of the walk-in area and should not be considered final.
