ABOUT ALTA VIEW
Alta View Elementary, located in the White City area of south Salt Lake County, is one of Jordan District's smaller elementary schools. The school serves students from kindergarten to sixth grade. Alta View patrons are pro-education, and enthusiastically support school activities and programs. Alta View, opened in 1963, is a well-kept building featuring self-contained classrooms.
  • LogoThe school serves 595 students on a traditional nine-month calendar.
  • The school day begins at 8:20 a.m. and ends at 2:55 p.m., On the last day of the week, in those weeks containing three or more school days, school ends at 1:15 p.m. to allow planning time for teachers.   
  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 22.30 in first grade, 1 to 23.10 in second grade, 1 to 24.60 in third grade, and 1 to 26.70 in grades four, five and six. The actual class size varies.
  • The Alta View staff is a diverse, outstanding group of professionals. All teachers hold bachelors' degrees and many have higher degrees as well.
  • All teachers and the principal are evaluated on a regular basis to help assure educational quality and professional development.
  • The curriculum meets all district and state requirements. Students are given a good foundation in basic skills as well as opportunities for social and cultural development.
  • Teachers work in teams so that all students have access to the best talents of each teacher.
  • Alta View students are expected to follow district dress guidelines and come to school in neat, clean, modest clothing. When children come dressed appropriately, the learning climate is enhanced and student achievement is increased.
  • Students are expected to learn self-discipline and to assume responsibility for their own behavior.
  • Resource programs, speech, and guidance services are available.
  • Alta View is the southeast area location for the Accelerated Learning Program (ALPS), a program for gifted/talented students.
  • Alta View houses three special needs preschool classrooms that are run through the Jordan Valley Child Development Center. The preschool accommodates children between the ages of three and five.
  • Alta View students are learning to use computers both for drill and practice in basic skills as well as technology training.
  • PTA and School Community Council organizations enrich school programs, give input on school issues and provide many hours of volunteer service.
  • A nutritious, hot lunch program is provided. Eighty percent of the students participate regularly. The student price is $1.50 per lunch. Alta View also provides a breakfast program for $.70 per meal.
  • Teachers provide many and varied activities to display student talents, interests and leadership/social skills.
  • School visitors are always welcome and asked to stop by the principal's office upon arriving to sign in and receive a "visitor" pass.
  • Alta View holds a History Fair that encourages research and presentation skills. Students with superior presentations advance to the regional level.
  • Other notables include science fairs, debate, choir, ski program, science, drama activities and a geography bee.
