Brookwood Elementary has a strong tradition of academic excellence and student success. Our student test scores rank consistently among the top elementary schools in the state. Teachers, students, and parents, work hard to ensure that all our children are successful, self-reliant, curious, responsible, and prepared to meet their next challenge and level of learning.
The Utah State Core Curriculum is carefully and systematically incorporated to develop and challenge the whole child-mind, body and character. Brookwood Elementary is a community of motivated learners and teachers working together, bringing the best global educational experiences, and opportunities to prepare life long learners.
Teaching and Learning
The make up of our faculty includes instructors with advanced degrees and extensive experience along with new teachers who provide fresh perspective and insights. Teachers are organized into grade equivalent teams where coupled efforts provide endless opportunities for individual growth.
Our PTA and parent volunteer involvement is second to none. Brookwood volunteers bring with them a wealth of information and experience to help sharpen and expand young minds. On site training enhances their donation of time and knowledge.
Brookwood provides a safe environment thus empowering the members of our school family to develop individual talents through balanced and comprehensive curricula in mathematics, reading, spelling, English, composition, science, health, art, music, physical education, social studies and technological competencies.
Community School
Brookwood Elementary offers a variety of classes for students through our community school. Students have an opportunity to engage in extra-curricular activities before and after school. Listed below is a sampling of classes we offer.
Volleyball - This popular class teaches the basics of volleyball while instilling a love of the game and a sense of fair play for the students.
Cooking - The basics of cooking are taught around a culinary theme. Students are engaged in all aspects of the cooking process. Our students leave the class armed with the knowledge and expertise to prepare a complete meal for their family.
Art - Unbelievable talents emerge when students participate in these classes. With gentle encouragement and a real flair for visual arts our teacher brings out the best in our young artists.
Orchestra - Beginning and advanced orchestra are taught in our music room. Students perform at school, local malls, and Symphony Hall.
Movie Making - The next Steven Spielberg may be among our midst. This exciting class offers students a chance to try their hand at the complicated process of writing, directing, starring, and editing their own films.
Debate - An interest in the law or politics may be sparked in this class. Students learn how to formulate and present arguments, both pro and con. The skills developed in this class will last a lifetime.

- Brookwood Facts
- Brookwood serves 588 students from kindergarten to sixth grade.
- The school, which opened in 1976, is in excellent condition and designed with classrooms surrounding the media center.
- School is in session 180 days a year on a regular nine-month calendar. The school day begins at 8:55 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. except on Fridays when school closes at 1:50 p.m. to allow teachers time for planning.
- The faculty is comprised of a blend of new and experienced teachers. The faculty is organized in teams with one teacher assigned as the team leader.
- Brookwood offers a comprehensive curriculum including mathematics, reading, spelling, English, science, health, handwriting, composition, art, music, physical education, social studies, and technological competencies. Students spend a minimum of one hour a day on math and about two hours a day on language arts.
- Teachers are evaluated regularly with a combination of formal observations by the principal, team evaluations, and student and parent surveys.
- A full-time special education teacher and half-time speech, language and guidance specialists serve students with special needs.
- Students are expected to attend school regularly. Parents are asked to notify the school if a student must be absent and to send a written excuse when the student is able to return.
- Brookwood follows Jordan District's dress code, which requires neat, clean clothing, which is appropriate for school.
- Students are expected to behave in a responsible manner in class, on the playground, while participating in activities and going to and from school.
- A hot lunch is served daily at a price of $1.50 per lunch. Students who prefer to bring lunch from home may purchase milk for 25 cents per carton.
- Bus service is provided for students who live 1-1/2 miles or more from school.
- Brookwood has an excellent PTA and School Community Council to assist with activities, address school concerns, and assure communication between the school and community.
- Visitors are encouraged to come to Brookwood to see learning in action. Please contact the principal or teacher before visiting classes.
- Brookwood offers a variety of special programs including early morning orchestra, Career Day, Young Astronauts, Science Fair, Invention Convention, Artist in Residence, National Geography Bee, Safety Patrol, and Community School classes.
- Gifted/Talented activities include Junior Debate, Young Inventors, Talented Young Authors, and Mountain Math.
- Parent volunteers give about 10,000 hours of service to the school each year.
- Brookwood teachers, students, and parents work together as "Partners in Learning" with commitment to quality education.
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula. Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests
The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies. The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8. The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6. Results are reported as the average percentile rank. The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.

Direct Writing Assessment (DWA)
The Direct Writing Assessment (DWA) is designed to assess the writing skills of 6th and 9th grade students in February and March each year. The following six components of writing are assessed: ideas & content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.
