About Butler Elementary
LogoButler Elementary School, located in the northeast area of Jordan School District, serves students from a basically middle class community. Butler Elementary is an old, proud school with a tradition of strong community support. The Butler faculty is committed to provide students with a solid foundation in basic skills and to offer a variety of experiences and activities to help students develop into strong, worthwhile, contributing citizens.
  • Butler serves approximately 478 students from kindergarten to sixth grade.
  • The school, built in 1923, has undergone extensive remodeling and features self-contained classrooms and air conditioning.
  • Butler is on a traditional nine-month calendar with 180 days of school each year. The school begins at 8:20 a.m. and ends at 2:55 p.m. except on the last school day of the week (usually Friday) when school ends at 1:15 p.m. to allow teachers time for planning meetings.
  • The teacher/pupil staffing ratio is 1 to 22.30 in first  and second grades, 1 to 23.30 in third grade, and 1 to 26.30 in grades four, five and six. However, the actual class sizes vary.
  • Butler's faculty is professional and hard working. All teachers have received extensive training in the area of Balanced Literacy Six-Trait Writing, and Developing Mathematics Ideas.
  • The curriculum meets all State and District requirements. Reading, spelling and language are taught with Houghton Mifflin texts. Math instruction is taught with Scott Foresman Addison Westley texts with a strong emphasis on problem solving.
  • Teacher evaluation is an on-going process conducted by the principal.
  • A speech clinician, educational psychologist and resource team are available to help students who qualify for special services.
  • Computer education is included in the curriculum for students in all grades.
  • Butler Elementary houses a cluster unit for students from throughout the District who have severe physical disabilities. Also we have pre-school classes. These special students help the regular Butler students learn to accept individual differences and concentrate on abilities rather than disabilities.
  • Butler's dress code is in accordance with Jordan School District policy AA-419. Students are expected to be punctual and attend school regularly.
  • School lunch is $1.50 for students and $2.50 for adults. A nutritious, well-planned lunch is served every day.
  • A School Community Council, with representatives from each neighborhood, meets to discuss school concerns and goals.
  • The PTA is very active and parent volunteers are an integral part of the school’s program. Volunteerism is encouraged and appreciated.
  • School visitors are welcome, and asked to check in at the office upon arrival. (Students may not bring all-day guests to school.)
Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests
The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies.  The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8.  The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6.  Results are reported as the average percentile rank.  The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.
