About Copper Canyon Elementary

Our beautiful new school which opened in 2004, has a clean-line design featuring flexible space classrooms, centrally located media center and up-to-date computer lab.
Copper Canyon Elementary serves approximately 830 students in kindergarten through sixth grade on a four track year-round schedule.  In addition, we serve approximately 70 students (ages 3-5) in our wonderful pre-school.  The inclusion of our four pre-school sessions provides services to our community needing early intervention.
Each track is in school for about 45 days followed by 15 days of vacation.  During July the school closes to allow all students a common vacation.
logo     The school day for grades 1-6 begins at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m. except on Friday when school is dismissed at 1:25 p.m. to allow for teacher planning time. Kindergarten students will attend either a morning session or afternoon session.  Morning kindergarten session begins at 8:25 a.m. Monday-Thursday and ends art 11:18 a.m. On Friday, the morning kindergarten session begins at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 10:30 a.m. Afternoon kindergarten sessions begin at 12:37 p.m. Monday-Thursday and end at 3:25 p.m. On Friday, the afternoon session begin at 11:25 a.m. and end at 1:25 p.m.
The pupil/teacher ratio is 1 to 22.3 in first grade, 1 to 22.6 in second grade, 1 to 24.1 in third grade, 1 to 26.7 in fourth grade, 1 to 26.7 in fifth grade, 1 to 26.7 in sixth grade.  The actual class sizes vary.
Bus service is provided for students who live 1-½ miles or more from the school.
Copper Canyon offers a nutrious breakfast beginning at 8:00 a.m. each school day.  The price for breakfast is $0.70 for students and $1.60 for adults.  A hot lunch program is
provided for students each day at a price of $1.50 per lunch.  The adult price is $2.50. Reduced rates or free breakfast and/or lunches are available to students in need.

  • SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Copper Canyon has an excellent, well-trained staff.  Thirteen teachers have their Masters Degree, seven teachers have their Early Childhood degree, and seven are ESL endorsed.  Two teachers have their Gifted and Talented endorsements. Copper Canyon has a literacy specialist, resource teachers, preschool teachers, speech/language  pathologists and a guidance specialist to support our students. All staff members are formally evaluated on a regular basis for the purpose of improving performance. Teachers also continually improve their skills through inservices and seminars offered by the school and the district.
  • We are lucky to have many volunteers and visitors come to our school  We ask that all people check in the office upon arrival
  • The curriculum meets or exceeds all Jordan School District and State standards.  Copper Canyon Elementary uses the Houghton Miffin Reading Program and the Scott Forsman Math program.
  • Balanced literacy is implemented in all of our classrooms and we have started a balanced literacy library, which includes teacher loaned materials, as well as, material purchased with School Trust Land monies.  Each teacher has access to the library.
  • We have implemented a school-wide assessment in reading using Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy (DIBLES).  We scheduled three assessment windows throughout the year for our school team to evaluate each student to establish benchmarks for monitoring instruction in the area of reading.  In addition, teachers monitor students daily in reading, as well as, math and review progress during their weekly grade level team meetings.
  • The teachers at our school have implemented a school-wide Writer’s Folder which are portfolios to improve and monitor writing skills.  Writer’s Folders are in place for all students and will be used each year the student is enrolled in Copper Canyon Elementary.
  • We are working to improve technology access for students and teachers by providing laptops for each teacher, training for use in instruction, grading programs and Internet access.  Students in each grade level have use of the 31 computers in our lab.
  • EVENTS:
  • We have implemented a school-wide positive behavior program to recognize students for the good behavior and achievements.  Students make daily visits to the office for recognition by the Principal for good citizenship.  Coyote Pride Awards are given to those students who achieve their grade level goals set by the teachers.
  • Copper Canyon Coyotes take great pride in being physically fit.  Students in grade 3-6 will be given the opportunities to earn a Presidential Physical Fitness Award through participation in yearlong fitness activities.
  • We have two school music programs before school involving a choir and orchestra.
  • Students of our school have the opportunity to become members of our student council.  The council helps students become involved in leadership positions that will help them and the school.
  • Copper Canyon has a school-wide “buddy” program, which encourages older students to assist younger students and focuses on citizenship,  literacy and fine arts.
  • Enrichment Days are scheduled throughout the year for all students to emphasize creativity, fine arts, and science.
  • Our school has a great and active PTA Organization and School Community Council.  Community involvement has been terrific at Copper Canyon. PTA and the School Community Council continue to support our staff in various ways.  Our overall focus as a school community has been to work together to improve in order to meet the needs of our students.
  • Principal's Pride is another program to recognize individual academic success for all students.
Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.
