About Copperview Elementary

Copperview Elementary is located in the middle of a well-established community in Midvale City. Some of the earliest homes built in Salt Lake Valley are within the school's boundaries. The area has produced many noteworthy citizens, including former Congressman Dan Marriott, Astronaut Don Lind, and prominent civic leader Maurine C. Jensen. The school also serves students living in a rapidly expanding area of apartment houses and mobile home units.

The Copperview staff strives to give students a well-rounded education and a good foundation in basic skills. One of the top goals is to help students develop the self-esteem that is vital to success in school and life.

  • Copperview Elementary serves 446 students in grades kindergarten through six.
  • The school, which opened in 1961, is a traditional style with self-contained classrooms.
  • Copperview operates on a standard nine-month calendar. The school day begins at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m. except on Fridays when the school closes at 1:40 p.m. to allow time for teachers to hold planning meetings.
  • LogoThe teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 22.50 in first grade, 1 to 22.80 in second grade, 1 to 24.30 in third grade, and 1 to 26.40 in grades four, five and six. The actual class sizes vary.
  • All faculty members are state certificated professionals with a variety of talents and interests.
  • The teachers work in teams, sharing responsibilities in the academic areas as well as in physical education, art, music, etc.
  • All teachers are formally evaluated on a regular basis.
  • Copperview adheres to District dress standards, which require students to dress for school in clean, neat clothing. Each Friday is "Cougar Pride" day when students are invited to wear school tee shirts or sweatshirts to boost school spirit.
  • Students are expected to attend school regularly. A positive reinforcement program encourages good school citizenship. Students who consistently make an effort to follow class rules are recognized.
  • Academic excellence is stressed. We believe all students are gifted in some area and focus on providing education involving Talents Unlimited, Math Olympics, etc., to develop these talents.  Teachers are trained in balanced literacy, which encourages teachers to focus on student needs.
  • Resource and Title I programs are available to help students who need special assistance Special services are also provided for students with speech, language and hearing disabilities.
  • Title 1 is a federal program to increase reading and math scores.  The majority of those funds are used to fun personnel.  Title 1 funds 4 full time teachers, 4 half time teachers and 27 aides.  These Title 1 people reduce class size, run 2 computer labs, work with small groups and also provide one to one tutoring.
  • Bilingual services are provided for students whose native language is not English. Tutoring is offered in Spanish, Vietnamese, Laotian, Chinese, etc.
  • Copperview hosts 2 cluster units for students living throughout the District who have special learning or behavior problems. These students are mainstreamed so they may learn from and be helped by other students.
  • Computer training is emphasized. An effort is made to see that each student has time to work on a classroom computer each week. Keyboarding, word processing, and other skills are taught.
  • A majority of the Copperview students walk to school. Bus service is provided for those who live on a hazardous walking route east of State Street.
  • A hot lunch is provided each day at a price of $1.35 per lunch. Breakfast is available each morning from 8:15 to 8:35 a.m. at 70 cents per breakfast. Students may also buy milk for 20 cents per carton. Free and reduced price lunches are provided to qualifying students. During the summer months, a breakfast and lunch program is available to all children.
  • The PTA plays an important role in planning extra-curricular activities. PTA volunteers also help out regularly in the classrooms.
  • Visitors and community volunteers are also welcome at Copperview. Please check with the principal upon arriving.
  • Students are rewarded for good behavior through our "Student of the Week" and "Student of the Month" programs.
  • Our teachers voluntarily spend hundreds of hours each year in graduate level college courses and staff development training to improve and enrich classroom teaching.
Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.
