ABOUT CRESCENT ELEMENTARY
Crescent
Elementary is located in the east central area of Jordan
School District in Sandy City. Situated in the center
of what was once the farming community of Crescent,
this modern school has strong ties to the past. Some
Crescent students have community roots dating back to
pioneer days, but a majority live in new, rapidly developing
residential areas. Crescent enjoys healthy school-community
cooperation. The school serves as the major public meeting
place for area residents.
Crescent teachers are dedicated to meeting the needs
of students. Basic skills are emphasized and many opportunities
are provided for students to develop culturally, socially
and emotionally.
-
Crescent Elementary serves 697 students
in kindergarten to sixth grade.
- The school moved to a new location in 1981 when
a modern, flexible space school was built and the historic
Crescent school was converted for use as an alternative
high school. The new school features four-class learning
centers for each grade. A central media center gives
the school an open pleasant feeling.
- Crescent operates on a year-round schedule. Students
are divided into four attendance tracks. Each track
is generally in school for 45 days followed by 15 days
of vacation. The school takes a common vacation during
the month of July. In most cases, parents may select
their child's attendance track.
- Crescent students begin school at 8:55 a.m. and
end at 3:50 p.m. except on Friday when school
closes at 1:50 p.m. to allow teachers time for planning
or making preparations for track changes.
- The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 25.00 in first, second and third
grades, 1 to 24.00 in fourth grade, 1 to 27.25 in fifth grade, and 1 to 24.00 in sixth grade,.
The actual class sizes vary.
- The curriculum is in keeping with state and District
guidelines and meets all of the requirements for elementary
students. The solid subjects of reading, English and
math are taught mostly during morning hours.
- Crescent teachers are all state certificated
and fully-qualified professional educators.
- All staff members are formally evaluated on a
regular basis to assure continuing professional development.
- Resource education is available for students
with special needs.
- Crescent students are expected to maintain dress,
attendance and discipline standards.
- An excellent hot lunch program is available to
students at a price of $1.50 per meal. Students are
asked to purchase school lunches by the week or by the
month.
- Bus service is provided for students who live
1-1/2 miles or more from school. A majority of the Crescent
students qualify for bus service.
- Crescent Elementary relies heavily on an active
PTA which organizes the parent volunteer program. Each
week many hours of service are provided by interested,
caring volunteers.
- A School Community Group meets regularly to discuss
important school issues and give the principal input
from the community's point of view.
- Visitors are always welcome at Crescent Elementary
and asked to check with the office before proceeding
through the school.
- Crescent teachers stay informed on the latest teaching
methods and techniques by regularly participating in
inservice training.
