About East Sandy Elementary
East Sandy Elementary serves an area of Sandy City which is economically and socially diverse. The school enjoys strong community interest and support. The East Sandy goal is to help each student gain a fund of basic knowledge through hard work and persistent effort and to provide many opportunities for student growth, recognition, and achievement. East Sandy teachers believe that as parents and teachers work together, students will develop into well-adjusted, happy individuals with a strong sense of self worth.
  • LogoEast Sandy Elementary serves 700 students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
  • The school opened in 1968 and contains twenty-seven classrooms. The school had a major reconstruction project during the summer of 2000.
  • School is in session 180 days a year on a regular nine-month schedule. Students are at school for 6 hours and 10 minutes each day with a 40-minute lunch/recess period and a 15-minute recess. 1st and 2nd grade lunch/recess period is 38 minutes daily.
  • The school day begins at 8:20 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m. daily. There is no "short day" for teacher planning.
  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 23.25 in first grade, 1 to 21.25 in second grade, 1 to 22 in third grade, and 1 to 27.75  in grades four, five and six. The actual class sizes vary.
  • All faculty members hold current teaching certificates. Many hold advanced degrees and affiliate with local, state, and national professional organizations.
  • All teachers are formally evaluated on a regular basis.
  • The curriculum meets all District and state requirements.
  • Teachers work together in teams to meet the individual needs of students. Students spend most of their day in self-contained classes with their own teacher, but may be taught in some subjects by another teacher on the team.
  • Technology training in the school's computer center is available to students in all grades.
  • Resource students are mainstreamed in regular classrooms and additional help is provided by resource teachers.
  • A school psychologist/guidance specialist is available to help students or parents who have problems or questions related to school, and a speech pathologist works with students who have language or speech problems.
  • All of the East Sandy students live within walking distance of the school and no bussing services are provided.
  • A hot lunch is provided each day at the price of $1.50 per lunch and breakfast is served for $.70 daily.
  • East Sandy has an active and supportive PTA as well as a School Community Group which meets regularly as an advisory board on school-related issues.
  • East Sandy has a significant force of volunteer workers who help in the school and classrooms daily.
  • Visitors are welcome and need to check in at the office upon arrival to sign in a wear a visitor badge while in the building.
  • Picture ID is required to check out students.
  • East Sandy had a state finalist in the Geography Bee in 2006.
  • East Sandy is celebrating making AYP for the 2006 school year.

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests
The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies.  The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8.  The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6.  Results are reported as the average percentile rank.  The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.

Direct Writing Assessment (DWA)
The Direct Writing Assessment (DWA) is designed to assess the writing skills of 6th and 9th grade students in February and March each year.  The following six components of writing are assessed: ideas & content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.
