Elk Meadows Elementary was built in 1998. It located in the southwest corner of the District's boundaries, the school serves the Garden Grove, Vista Farms, Elk Meadows, Whispering Sands, Ashford Acres, Cameron Park, Edenview and Hearthstone subdivisions. Elk Meadows operates on a year-round schedule.
The staff at Elk Meadows is working to create a safe, warm learning climate where every student can master the basic skills and develop a sense of self-worth through a variety of learning experiences. School spirit is very high, and teachers and parents are working in partnership to help students gain academic competence, develop social skills, and become responsible citizens.
- Elk Meadows Elementary serves 868 students in grades K-6.
- The school is on a modified year-round school calendar. Students are divided into four attendance groups or tracks. Typically, each track is in school for 45 days and then has a 15 day vacation. During July, the school closes to allow all students a common vacation.
- The school day begins at 8:25 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m. except on Fridays when school is dismissed at 1:25 p.m. to provide time for teachers to plan curriculum and receive training.
- The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 21.20 in first grade, 1 to 22.00 in second grade, 1 to 21.17 in third grade, and 1 to 26.40 in grades four, five and six; however, individual class sizes vary. There are 2 cluster units and one DK unit.
- The faculty is comprised of experienced teachers and many have advanced degrees in early childhood and elementary education.
- Elk Meadows has added several mobile computer labs to serve children in all grades. We are providing laptop computers to the children and teachers who use the lab. The lab has been a great support for our curriculum and will provide our children with excellent opportunities for project-based activities in technology. Our desktop computer lab was upgraded during the summer with the latest flat screen technology.
- The school is in the second year with the "STAR" program which is a skill-based reading program that will focus on kindergarten through sixth grade children who are having difficulties learning how to read. Parents will be asked to volunteer in this endeavor to help teachers administer the program.
- Elk Meadows will be a training site again this year for student teachers from the University of Phoenix and Southern Utah University. We are excited to have 6 students from Bingham High as a part of their own educational experience. We welcome these future teachers and look forward to working with them.
- The school's curriculum meets or exceeds all state and District standards. The classwork in each grade follows the State and District Core Curriculum Guidelines. We are also conducting a vigorous character education program in the school. Our PTA is supporting this effort to develop high moral values in our students.
- Basic subjects are taught in self-contained classrooms. Teachers work in teams to provide instruction in basic subjects, arts, physical education and music.
- Elk Meadows follows the District dress standard which requires clean, neat, modest clothing. Students are expected to learn self-discipline. If serious problems arise, the student, teacher, parents, counselor, and principal work as a team to find the best solution for the student.
- The professional staff is competent and trained to give students an excellent education. Teachers are evaluated regularly with the aim of maintaining high quality instruction in every classroom.
- Elk Meadows has a resource program that includes a variety of special services for students with special learning needs.
- The school has an excellent Instructional Media Center which offers students a variety of materials for academic study and personal enjoyment. Students are encouraged to go to the center and use the materials for class assignments, independent study, and reading for pleasure.
- Nutritious, well-balanced breakfasts and lunches are served each day. The student price $1.50 for lunch.
- Visitors are always welcome at Elk Meadows and asked to drop by the office upon arrival. The Elk Meadows staff is happy to assist visitors and anxious to help new students feel at home.
- Elk Meadows has eleven ESL-endorsed teachers, two gifted/talented teachers and three reading-endorsed teachers.
- Elk Meadows has conducted significant in-service programs with the staff to strengthen literacy skills of the children. The school has been given grants of up to $10,000 to work on reading, science, physical education and environmental studies.
- The school will be conducting a CPR certification program for staff members to certify in child and adult CPR. South Jordan City has worked with Jordan District schools to add AED machines with training.
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula. Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.
