About Foothills Elementary

Foothills Elementary  is located in a new, young community in West Riverton  that is rapidly growing. The school is working to provide students with a learning climate that will enable them  to grow academically, physically, socially and emotionally.  Our goal is to help each student master the basic skills and develop a life-long appreciation for learning.

  • Foothills MustangsGeneral Information
  • Foothills is designed to serve 990 students from kindergarten to sixth grade. The school opened in August of 2003. Enrollment at the school’s opening was 500, and just under 1300 and counting are enrolled for 2006-2007. New homes are continuing to be built at a rapid pace within the school boundaries.
  • The school features all self-contained classrooms with exterior windows and interior hall skylights. A media center, multipurpose center, cafeteria, office suite and specialty areas complete this modern, attractive facility.
  • Foothills is a year-round school with four attendance tracks. Each track is in session for 45 days followed by a 15-day vacation. In most instances, families may select the track with the vacation schedule they prefer. The school takes a common vacation in July.
  • The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m. except on Fridays when students are dismissed at 1:25 p.m. to give teachers time for planning.
  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 23.25 in Kindergarten, 1 to 22.80 in first grade, 1 to 23.10 in second grade, 1 to 24.60 in third grade and 1 to 26.70 in grades four, five and six. The actual class sizes vary.
  • A delicious hot lunch is prepared in our kitchen daily. The price is $1.50 per lunch. Students who prefer to bring lunch from home may purchase milk for 25 cents a carton.
  • Foothills is an all walking school with no bussing services.
  • Staff
  • Foothills Elementary staff includes 49 certified teachers and specialists. In addition, 24 classified employees serve in various other capacities. These numbers are changing monthly with the increasing enrollment.
  • All Foothills teachers hold current teaching certificates. Several teachers have earned advanced degrees and educational endorsements beyond the regular teaching certificate.
  • All staff members are formally evaluated on a regular basis for the purpose of improving performance. Teachers continually participate in inservice classes to improve instructional skills.
  • Two full-time resource teachers are available to help students who are struggling academically. Full-time guidance and speech specialists are also on staff.
  • Teachers work together in teams to meet individual student needs. Flexible grouping strategies and collaboration among teachers aid in this process.
  • A full time literacy specialist is available to assist students and teachers  with basic literacy skills.
  • Curriculum
  • The curriculum meets or exceeds all District and state requirements. Teachers utilize Balanced Literacy strategies to teach reading and writing in all subject areas. Math is taught using a combination of Investigations as well as the Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley curriculum. Science and Social Studies curriculum are taught using both district and teacher-designed guides and materials using a hands-on approach. Curriculum is individualized and differentiated to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Technology training in the school's computer lab is available to all students in all grades. A mobile lab of laptop computers is also used by students.
  • Special programs have been designed for students with learning disabilities, speech and communication difficulties, and behavioral disorders. These students are served through a special education program.
  • Community Involvement
  • A School Community Group meets regularly to discuss local school problems, review District and state problems, and make recommendations for action to the principal.
  • The Parent Teacher Association is an active organization at Foothills Elementary. Volunteers spend hundreds of hours annually, assisting teachers and students in the classrooms.
  • Parents and community volunteers are encouraged to participate at Foothills. Volunteers help teachers with clerical tasks and small group instruction.
  • Visitors are always welcome at Foothills. Please make arrangements with the principal before entering classrooms.
  • We are a new school with a great faculty and outstanding school spirit. We enjoy parent and community involvement, and student progress in academics and self-discipline is exceptional.
Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.
