ABOUT MIDVALE ELEMENTARY

Midvale Elementary celebrates diversity. Our student population of 600 students (grades K-6) is composed of 65% Hispanic, 31% Caucasian, 3% Native American, and 1% other minority children. 70% of our population speaks a language other than English as their primary language. Approximately 92% of our students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program. Breakfast and lunch is served 12 months a year. Our mobility rate exceeds 80% as 50% of our population moves two or more times during the year.

LogoOur school goal is to meet individual student needs. Our motto is "More Students Doing Better Work." Our staff collaborates and uses a TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) approach to solving problems and achieving goals.

In an effort to provide a quality education for each student, a progressive, school-wide reform initiative is in place. Midvale Elementary qualifies for many state and federal grants. These funds are used to hire additional certified teachers, to reduce class size, and give students individual attention. Class sizes at Midvale average less than 25 students per classroom. All teachers have their ESL endorsement, and all teachers use ESL teaching strategies in their classrooms. Teacher specialists are on staff to provide additional ESL and resource instruction to meet compliance regulations. A technology teacher specialist is also on staff for classroom instructional purposes and to keep us "up, running, and on line."

All teachers have received Balanced Literacy training and incorporate the best teaching practice daily for English literacy instruction. Literacy and math are our focus. All areas of the curriculum are integrated into these two major areas supported with technology. There is a large school balanced literacy library and classroom reading libraries to supply teachers and students with a variety of reading materials. The Land Trust grant is used to support a school-wide math facts program. In addition, social skills, character education and School to Work programs are taught as part of the daily schedule.

Midvale has a one-of-a-kind two-way Spanish/English immersion program in one classroom per grades K-6. In this program, classes consist of English speaking and Spanish-speaking students. Classroom instruction is delivered in Spanish and in English. Students completing this program will be bi-literate in both languages. Parent requests and teacher recommendations screen students for successful participation. Student permits and transfers from other schools are accepted if room is available.

The 21st Century Boys and Girls Club Community Learning Centers grant provides after-school care including activities and tutoring for an average of 100 students (K-6) from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday. This program is year round with the summer program hours 9 AM to 5 PM. A healthy snack is served to all students attending.

To promote quality family opportunities for our patrons, Midvale Elementary participates in the JSIT and Midvale City Community Building Community initiatives. Participation in these programs provides seamless service patterns for children and families with special needs in our area.

The Travelers Aid Homeless Shelter is located in our school boundaries. Students from the shelter attend Midvale Elementary and participate in all programs available to all students.

Midvale Elementary is home to four sessions of Head Start. This program prepares students to begin school and are an asset in our community.

Although Midvale Elementary is 57 years old, the building is well maintained by our efficient custodial staff. Our classrooms are large with windows and the carpet is well preserved in the hallways. Our cafeteria is a five-star model, and our cooks are the best!

The staff at Midvale Elementary is dedicated, valiant, enthusiastic, and devoted. Classroom teachers put in long hours, sign up for in-service classes after school, score on the high end of their evaluations, and are eager to do "what's right for kids." These practices may be seen daily in the classrooms. Teachers work well together to provide quality experiences for students.

Midvale Elementary has a school-wide Title One program. As such, funds are used to hire teachers and assistants to help students learn. A CCC teaching lab, SOARS, and Early Success reading programs as well as additional materials and in-service opportunities are available to all students from Title One funding. A literacy coordinator is on staff to coordinate programs and mentor new teachers.

We have a full-time math coach who works with students and teachers daily. Students use a computer program to access their individual progress in learning state objectives.

Full translation services are available daily in the office. Translation is also provided for all parent conferences, phone calls, registration, PTA meetings, and whenever needed. All printed parent communication is sent home in English and Spanish.

All parents are welcome and encouraged to participate in the education of their children. A large cadre of volunteers come weekly to provide STAR one-on-one reading help for children. (Business partners and volunteer organizations are directly involved by providing backpacks for all students, books, rewards, supplies, student home hygiene supplies, shoes, clothing, and incentives for learning as "It takes a whole village to raise our kids.")

  • Midvale traditionally has an active PTA and School Community Council which provide valuable service to the school each year.
  • Each year, parent volunteers donate hundreds of hours of direct classroom service.
  • Our outcome-based math program allows qualifying fifth and sixth grade students to study algebra.
  • Each year our teachers attend hours of inservice to upgrade and enhance instructional skills.
  • Several of our teachers have been recognized for outstanding classroom instruction.
