About Midvalley Elementary

Midvalley Elementary is located in a stable middle class community in Midvale City where parents have a high interest in school. The mission of the Midvalley staff is to recognize the uniqueness of each child, to nurture self-esteem; to provide a sound academic learning environment; and to foster appropriate social skills and promote responsible citizenship.

LogoMidvalley teachers make every effort to recognize and provide for students' individual needs and to give each one opportunity to participate in esteem-building activities. Communication with parents is ongoing and parents are encouraged to be fully involved at school.

  • Midvalley serves about 585 students from kindergarten through sixth to grade. In addition our school houses two Special Education classrooms for three to five year olds. Their enrollment totals about 40 students of which about 10 are normally developing students whose parents pay tuition and transport their own children. If you are interested in this program, please call 412-2510.
  • School is in session 180 days a year on a standard nine-month calendar.
  • The school day begins at 9:05 a.m. and ends at 3:35 p.m. except on Fridays when school closes at 1:55 p.m. to allow teachers time for planning.
  • The building, which opened in 1957, is a one level, traditional brick construction with self-contained classrooms in all grades.
  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 22.30 in first grade, 1 to 23.10 in second grade, 1 to 24.60 in third grade, and 1 to 26.70 in grades four, five and six. The actual class sizes vary.
  • All Midvalley teachers have bachelor's degrees and state teaching certificates. Many teachers have or are working toward advanced university degrees and special teaching endorsements. •Balanced Literacy is the framework followed to teach reading. Guided Reading Groups are used with The Houghton Mifflin series used for the “Shared Reading” component of Balanced Literacy •The Scott Foresman Series is used in math.
  • Midvalley teachers plan cooperatively in grade-level teams to see that individual student needs are met.
  • All staff members are formally evaluated on a regular basis to assure professional development and continuing quality in education.
  • Early Steps/Next Steps tutoring is used to assist in reading.
  • Two full-time resource teachers, a half time speech language pathologist and a half time school counselor are on staff to work with students who have special learning needs.
  • All students receive technology training with computers.
  • Students are expected to attend school every day unless they are ill. Students should dress in clean, modest clothing, which is appropriate for school.
  • Hot breakfast and lunch are served daily. The student price is $1.50 per lunch and $.70 per breakfast. Free and reduced price meals are also available to qualifying students.
  • Bus service is provided to all students who live 1-1/2 miles or more from school.
  • Volunteerism is encouraged at Midvalley. Many parents and others help out at the school on a regular basis and lend a hand for special events and activities.
  • School visitors are welcome and required to check in at the office upon arriving.
  • Employees, visitors, and volunteers are required to wear a badge. Visitors and volunteers receive theirs upon checking in at the office.
  • Our teachers regularly provide students with opportunities to gain special recognition and build self-esteem.
  • Teachers voluntarily participate in hours of inservice each year to assure quality teaching skills.
  • Fourteen teachers are ESL endorsed.
  • We have an ongoing business partnership with Harmon's Grocery Store (700 East 7800 South). They have supplied us with various incentives and support materials. We encourage our school community to support them in return.
Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests
The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies.  The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8.  The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6.  Results are reported as the average percentile rank.  The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.
