Monte Vista Elementary is located in South Jordan City, a rural community of about 48,050 residents situated in the southwest part of Salt Lake Valley. Monte Vista enjoys strong parent support through PTA and parent volunteer programs.
Monte Vista teachers are committed to excellence and use a team teaching approach to instruction. By planning and teaching cooperatively, the teachers are better able to meet the educational and emotional needs of each student. The Monte Vista goal is to provide a quality education for every student.
- Monte Vista serves 900 students in grades kindergarten through six. A majority is Caucasian, but a few are Asian, Hispanic, and African-American.
- The school opened in 1977 and had an interior remodeling in the summer of 1991 to enclose the classroom areas.
- Monte Vista is a year-round school. Students are divided into four attendance groups or tracks. Each track is in school for 45 days followed by 15 days of vacation. The school takes a common vacation during the month of July.
- The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m. except on Fridays when students are dismissed at 1:25 p.m. to give teachers time for planning.
- The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 22.30 in first through third grades, and 1 to 26.30 in grades four, five and six. The actual class sizes vary.
- All faculty members are certified to teach in their particular grade or specialty, and many have advanced degrees and special teaching certificates. The administrator, teachers, and members of the support staff are all evaluated on a regular basis.
- Monte Vista follows the State Core Curriculum guidelines. Basic skills are emphasized and a special management system coordinates lessons from grade to grade and assures against instructional gaps.
- In addition to the regular educational programs, special services are provided for students in the areas of speech, guidance, resource, and gifted/talented.
- Teachers work in teams for the overall benefit of students.
- A nutritious school lunch is served daily. The student price is $1.75 per lunch. About three-fourths of the Monte Vista students participate. Free and reduced-price lunches are available to students who qualify under federal income guidelines.
- Bus service is provided for all students who live 1-1/2 miles or more from school. Under special circumstances, other Monte Vista students are allowed to ride the bus if space is available.
- Parent concerns are addressed through our School Community Council, which includes parent representatives from all areas of the Monte Vista community. This group acts as a liaison between the school and the community and makes recommendations to the principal on important school issues.
- Parent volunteers are used in all grades on a regular basis. Volunteer services are coordinated through the PTA.
- School visitors are always welcome at Monte Vista. All visitors should check in through the school office in order to receive assistance from the school staff and to ensure student safety.
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula. Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.
