Rosamond
Elementary, located in Riverton City in south Salt Lake
Valley, serves students from kindergarten through sixth
grade. Rosamond enjoys support from a rural community
interested in providing a healthy family environment
and a small city interested in the Arts and varied recreational
opportunities.
Rosamond maintains high standards of excellence which
encourage students to reach for their highest academic
potential. Teachers use a variety of strategies to meet
individual learning needs and help students develop
problem solving skills. Rosamond classrooms are stimulating,
upbeat and positive. Students are taught responsible
citizenship as teachers set reasonable limits, reinforce
positive behavior, and build student self-esteem.
Rosamond serves 930 students on a year-round calendar.
Students are divided into four attendance groups. Each
group is in school approximately 45 days followed by
15 days of vacation. All groups have a common vacation
during the month of July. - The school, opened in 1985, is an attractive, modern, flexible-space design. It was remodeled in 1997 to provide self-contained classroom space.
- School starts at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 3:25 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday, the school day ends at 1:25 p.m. to give teachers time for planning.
- Year-round students have the same teacher all year but may study in a different classroom after returning from vacation.
- The pupil/teacher ratio is 1 to 22.30 in first grade, 1 to 23.10 in second grade, 1 to 24.60 in third grade, and 1 to 26.70 in grades four, five and six. The actual class sizes vary.
- Rosamond has 40 certificated educators and a classified staff of 18. All teachers have bachelor's degrees, 11 have master's degrees, one holds an endorsement in gifted education, 10 hold endorsements in ESL, and 10 have endorsements in early childhood development.
- Teachers are evaluated annually.
- The curriculum meets or exceeds District and state standards. Houghton Miffin Reading supports the Balanced Literacy approach used by all teachers. Manipulatives are used in math to build conceptual understanding.
- Teachers work in teams so that all of the students in the grade may benefit from each teacher's special skill in foreign language, science, technology, music, physical education, etc.
- Rosamond students are expected to dress modestly and treat others with respect.
- Parents are asked to call the school if their child is going to be absent.
- A hot lunch program is provided daily. The student price is $1.50 per lunch. About two-thirds of the students participate.
- Students who live 1.5 miles or more away from school receive bus service.
- Resource programs are provided for students who need help in guidance, speech or academics.
- A school lab of 30 computers is available for student use. All students have computer instruction once a week. Classroom computers are in use daily.
- Visitors are always welcome and asked to check in at the office upon arrival. School tours may be arranged upon request.
- We have an active PTA, School Community Council, and Volunteer Program.
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula. Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.
