ABOUT SANDY ELEMENTARY

Sandy Elementary is located in the heart of Sandy City, one of Utah's most progressive and rapidly growing cities. The school serves a middle-class community and has roots dating back to 1881 when the first Sandy school was built at the same location. Today's building was erected in 1951 with a major addition in 1972, and a complete renovation in 2005. The renovation came about because of a fire in the building in 2004.

Sandy Elementary is dedicated to meeting the individual needs of students. The staff, students and parents work together to see that students obtain the academic and social skills necessary for becoming healthy, productive adults. Students are taught respect for family, community and country. Programs are in place to recognize the special talents and skills of each student and to help each one develop a positive self-image.

  • LogoSandy Elementary serves 680 students K-6.
  • The school operates on a traditional 180-day, nine-month calendar. The school day begins at 8:20 a.m. and ends at 2:55 p.m. except on Fridays when school is dismissed at 1:15 p.m. to allow teachers time for planning.
  • The multi-level building features self-contained classrooms with expansive windows and an expanded media center. A new computer lab designed to provide training in technology and writing has been added as has a computer lab in the Title I facility to bolster reading skills. Available also are 4 mobile labs to support technology and writing in the classrooms.

Technology is a focus at Sandy with the integration of digital photography, publishing, keyboarding, use of internet, and many other forms of media.

  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 22 in first grade, 1 to 24.50 in second grade, 1 to 22.25 in third grade, and 1 to 31.6 in fourth grade, 1 to 25.3 in fifth grade and 1 to 27 in sixth grade. The actual class sizes vary.
  • The curriculum follows District and state guidelines and meets all of the requirements for elementary students.
  • The faculty is well-trained and professional. Teachers are state certified and several have master's degrees.
  • Bilingual services are provided for students whose family language is not English.
  • Sandy is a fully implemented Title I school. All students are eligible to receive special assistance by a highly qualified staff to improve reading and math skills.
  • Resource, guidance, and speech specialists work with students who have special needs.
  • Orchestra and chorus programs are offered to interested students at Sandy after school.
  • Two busses provide bus service to students who qualify.
  • A hot lunch program is provided daily. The student price is $1.50 per lunch. A breakfast program is provided 30 minutes prior to the school starting time. The breakfast price is 70 cents. Free and reduced-price lunches and breakfasts are available to qualifying students.
  • Students are expected to dress for school in clean, modest, appropriate clothing and to take pride in the school and help keep the building and grounds litter free.
  • Parents are encouraged to be actively involved at school. Many opportunities for service are provided through the PTA and School Community Council organizations.
  • Visitors are always welcome at Sandy Elementary. Please check in at the office upon arrival.

Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests

The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies.  The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8.  The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6.  Results are reported as the average percentile rank.  The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.
