ABOUT SPRUCEWOOD ELEMENTARY

Sprucewood Elementary is located in south Sandy City in a residential suburban area comprised primarily of middle-income homes. The school enjoys positive home/school relationships with teachers and parents combining efforts to see that individual student needs are met. Teachers are working to give each student opportunities to succeed, to learn the organized curriculum, and to gain a sense of self-worth.

  • LogoSprucewood serves 854 students from K-6.
  • The school operates on a year-round schedule. Students are divided into four attendance groups or tracks. Each track has approximately 45 days of school followed by 15 days of vacation. The school takes a common vacation during the month of July.
  • The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m. except on Fridays when school is dismissed at 1:25 to allow teachers time for planning.
  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 22.50 in first grade, 1 to 22.80 in second grade, 1 to 24.30 in third grade, and 1 to 26.40 in grades four, five and six. The actual class sizes vary.
  • The curriculum meets or exceeds all state and District guidelines.
  • Curriculum highlights include
    • Accelerated Reader Program
    • Grade Level Programs
    • Presidential Physical Fitness Program
  • The Sprucewood faculty is comprised of state certificated teachers with diversified backgrounds and experiences. Teachers are involved in cooperative teaching at each grade level. Several have master's degrees and all have hours of training beyond the bachelor's degree required for state certification.
  • The Sprucewood faculty has been extensively trained in Balanced Literacy and teachers are incorporating Balanced Literacy components in their classrooms.
  • Sprucewood has adopted the Praxis Program school-wide. This program is designed to recognize students in need and helps teachers focus attention on those students.
  • Resource teachers, a speech therapist, and guidance counselor are on staff to help diagnose students with learning problems and tailor programs to meet their specific learning needs.
  • Computer instruction is available to students in all grades. Instruction takes place in a 30-station school computer lab.
  • Sprucewood students are expected to meet attendance, dress and discipline standards. Students should be in school every day unless they are ill. They should dress in clean, appropriate clothing and show respect and responsibility in their behavior.
  • Hot lunches are provided daily in the school cafeteria. The student price is $1.50 per lunch. Milk may be purchased for 25 cents per carton. Free and reduced price lunches are available to qualifying students.
  • The school has an active PTA which regularly sponsors school activities to enrich the learning program. A School Community Council meets monthly to provide input from the community on important school issues.
  • School volunteers log thousands of hours of service to the school each year.
  • Visitors are welcome and encouraged to check in at the office before visiting classrooms.
  • Sprucewood Elementary is part of the BYU Partnership. We have the benefit of working with interns, student teachers and cohort students in our classrooms. This program is under the direction of an Intern Coordinator.
  • We have several business partnerships, including Red Robin, Sizzler, Applebees, Hogi Yogi, Seven Peaks and many others. These business partnerships provide great support and incentives to our students.
  • Our teachers actively participate in many hours of in-service training each year to improve and enrich classroom teaching.
  • Our staff is working to make Sprucewood a warm, friendly, caring place for learning.
Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests

The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies.  The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8.  The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6.  Results are reported as the average percentile rank.  The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.
