ABOUT SUNRISE ELEMENTARY

Sunrise Elementary is located in a middle-to upper-income suburban community near the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains in southeast Salt Lake Valley. Most of the students live within the Sandy City limits, but some live in unincorporated areas of Salt Lake County.

The Sunrise faculty is dedicated to giving students a well-rounded education with a good foundation in basic skills and ample opportunities for social and emotional development.

  • LogoSunrise serves 670 students from K-6 on a traditional nine-month calendar.
  • The school day begins at 8:20 a.m. and ends at 2:55 p.m. except on Fridays, when school dismisses at 1:15 p.m. to allow teachers time for planning.
  • The modern, attractive building, which opened in 1976, features newly remodeled classrooms for each grade level. Students have easy access to a centrally located media center.
  • The pupil/teacher ratio is 1 to 22.30 in first grade, 1 to 23.10 in second grade, 1 to 24.60 in third grade, and 1 to 26.70 in grades four, five and six. The actual class sizes vary.
  • Sunrise has a dedicated faculty of well-trained teachers who work together in teams to provide an excellent education for students in each learning center.
  • The curriculum follows District and state guidelines and includes all of the elementary education requirements, as well as, many extras to stimulate interest and promote intellectual growth.
  • Sunrise students are expected to attend school regularly and to dress in clean, appropriate clothing.
  • Hot lunches are served daily in the cafeteria. The student price is $1.50 per lunch. Free and reduced price lunches are available to qualifying students.
  • Most Sunrise students live within walking distance of the school. Some students are bused from the Suncrest subdivision
  • Visitors are welcome at Sunrise. State law requires that all visitors first check in at the office before visiting classrooms.
  • Sunrise has a computer lab where students are learning technology skills, as well as, using computers for basic skill drills and practice.
  • Community support is high at Sunrise. Many volunteer hours are donated each year in the classroom, on the playground and in the computer lab.
  • Teachers are trained to promote higher-order thinking skills among students. One of our school goals is to help students learn to write well.
Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests

The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies.  The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8.  The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6.  Results are reported as the average percentile rank.  The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.
