ABOUT WELBY ELEMENTARY
  • Welby Elementary serves 1122 students from kindergarten to sixth grade in the suburban community of South Jordan. Most children walk to school, with five buses currently providing ridership from the Wood Ranch subdivision and Upper Glenmoor subdivision. Built in 1979, the school has traditionally enjoyed strong support from both its parents and surrounding neighbors.
  • Welby operates on a year-round schedule. Students are divided into four attendance groups or tracks. Each track is in school for approximately 45 days followed by 15 days of vacation. The entire school takes a common vacation during the month of July.
  • The school day begins a 8:25 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m., except on Fridays, when school is dismissed at 1:25 to allow teachers time to hold planning meetings and set up classrooms as one group of students leaves for vacation and another returns.
  • LogoWelby's dedicated faculty and staff include forty-six certificated teachers and administrators with forty-six bachelor's degrees, fourteen graduate degrees, five gifted and talented endorsements, one Level II math endorsement, five reading endorsements, one visual art endorsement, and thirteen English as a Second Language endorsements among their qualifications. Several staff members are District inservice instructors, and give seminars beyond our state. Every staff member participates in school and District professional development classes, and we are a "Balanced Literacy" school. Our Trust Lands Grant funds have been committed to creating a Literacy Lab within our school, leveled classroom libraries for all teachers, and working to continually improve the level of reading in our students. We have a full time teacher who is a Literacy Facilitator, who works with developing the professional skills of our faculty, and who also works with students who need extra support in reading. In addition to this, we have a part time assistant who facilitates our "I Can Read" program which is a reading tutoring program, geared at helping our students who are not reading at grade level. Our Jordan District Community School Improvement grant is focused on math and grades 3-6 balanced literacy development, especially writing throughout the curriculum.
  • We participate in the statewide "I Can Read" tutoring program. We are committed to having every child reading independently by the end of third grade. Volunteers from Bingham High School, Copper Hills High School, and our neighborhood receive tutor training and provide weekly one-on-one assistance for struggling emergent readers. Thirty-four students are currently served. Peer tutors in fifth and sixth grade are also trained to assist young readers before school.
  • The curriculum stresses basic skills in the academic areas with special emphasis given to higher level thinking skills, problem solving, technology, and the arts. We feel that it is important to teach to the whole child, and feel that the arts are an integral part of that.
  • Welby is a team teaching school. The teachers assigned to each grade work together as a team to implement the curriculum. The students are released early on Friday to facilitate this teaming. Students typically have opportunities to study with more than one teacher during a week.
  • Welby has an integrated gifted and talented program which assists students in developing higher level thinking skills, creativity, problem solving, and academic enrichment. All grades are served. Each grade uses the Junior Great Books program. The following District level programs are provided in various grades: Talented Young Authors, Creative Pursuits, Science Fair, History Fair, and Monster Math. Our school-wide "Paws for Reading" and "Paws for Success" award programs allow students to set and achieve goals each year. Second through sixth grade students may achieve Honor Roll status by maintaining a 90 percent average or above in academic subjects. Additionally, we subscribe to two online programs that provide additional challenge for our students, and these can be accessed at home as well as at school. They are our Plato math program, and our Kids College programs. These same programs also allow us to support the needs of our students who are functioning below grade level, as they are individualized, and tied to the state core curriculum.
  • Our new computer lab is installed with productivity software including Inspiration, Kidpix , Hyperstudio, Appleworks, and many others. The lab and school are networked and connected to the Internet. Teachers participate in regular technology inservice. Classroom sets of portable laptop computers called AlphaSmarts, allow whole classes to learn keyboarding or create writing projects within classrooms. We are also one of a few schools in Jordan District with a "Just N Time" portable lab with an "airport" for wireless Internet connection. Children in grades 1-6 utilize it. Through our Web site, all members of our staff can be contacted, and information accessed, such as the monthly lunch menu, PTA newsletter, and monthly calendar.
  • We are pleased to have a full time P.E. teacher , and every student has an opportunity to have 90 minutes of structured fitness and aerobic activity during the week. Healthy lifestyles are encouraged and an integral part of our curriculum. Welby is one of very few schools in the state to achieve the status of a Gold Medal Plus School.
  • Welby offers both a beginning and intermediate band and beginning and intermediate orchestra program before and after school. Approximately 100 students participate. We have a school choir that consists of 5th and 6th grade students, and currently have about 30 students in this program.
  • Welby is proud of its character education programs. We have used the nationally acclaimed "Virtues Project" for several years. Our Spirit Club is a service club consisting of 20 fifth- and 20 sixth- grade students who give service within and beyond our school. Past projects have included food drives, money for Hurricane Katrina victims, and quilts for children at Primary Children's Hospital. Seventy-five sixth grade students serve on our Safety Patrol to help provide safe passage each day for all students.
  • Our elected School Community Council meets at least four times a year to discuss issues of concern. It conducts fundraisers and provides support for projects such as school emergency preparedness supplies, a school sign, and artist-in-residents for various grades.
  • Our PTA provides great support for teachers and students. The PTA sponsors a yearly Reflections contest, holiday treats, Red Ribbon Week activities, as well as book fairs, parenting classes, field trips, and many other student services. PTA volunteers donate many hundreds of hours of service in classrooms at Welby throughout the year.
  • A hot lunch is served each day for $1.50 per day. Our food services personnel go beyond the mark to provide appetizing and nutritious choices in each menu.
  • Welby has many partnerships with local businesses which provide additional funds and support. Each child receives a planner through their financial contributions, as well as funding such school events as Health and Safety Fairs and Family Activity Nights in cooperation with the PTA. We are also proud members of the South Jordan Valley Chamber of Commerce.
  • School visitors are always welcome at Welby. Please check in at the office for directions and information. The principal is available to meet with patrons between 10 and 11:00 AM on most days, and by appointment.
  • Our students are given special opportunities to excel and receive recognition through our Principal's Pride Award, "I Follow the Rules" award, Honor Roll, Paws for Success, Visit to the Principal, Welby school choir, band, and orchestra,artist-in-residence, programs for gifted education, Welby clubs, science fairs, etc.
  • Welby participates in the State Motion Marathon or Heart Association Jump-A-Thon contests each year.
  • Many of our teachers have received "Teacher of the Month" awards and other honors.
  • Welby Elementary has teamed with the State Department of Cardiovascular Health, the State Office of Education, and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee to become a Gold Medal School. We are very proud of becoming one of the first schools to receive all three medals: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, and now, Gold Plus.
Student Achievement

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests

The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies.  The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8.  The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6.  Results are reported as the average percentile rank.  The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.
