ABOUT JORDAN HIGH

Jordan High School is located in the heart of Jordan School District. The original building, which dates from 1914, has been replaced with a modern new facility located a couple of blocks to the south. Originally, Jordan High served the all-rural community of southern Salt Lake Valley. Today, Jordan's student body is a rich mixture of urban, suburban, and rural lifestyles and varied socio-economic levels.

Jordan High Students are known as the "Beetdiggers." The mascot dates from the school's early days when students were dismissed from school each fall to help farmers harvest the sugar beets. Although the sugar beet industry is now gone, the school proudly continues the "Beetdigger" spirit and traditions. Each year at the opening assembly student government officers top sugar beets and take a bite.

Jordan High's mission is to help students recognize their worth, provide each one with a quality education, assure a safe learning environment, help students prepare to assume their responsibilities as adults, and accept and appreciate their individuality.

  • LogoJordan serves approximately 2,000 students, grades 10 to 12.
  • School is in session 180 days a year. Students enroll in four classes a day on an A/B block schedule. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 2:25 p.m., including a 30-minute lunch period.
  • The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 27.00. Actual class sizes vary.
  • Our teachers are well trained and teach in their major or minor fields. Over one third hold master or doctoral degrees. While a majority are native Utahans, some come from the East Coast, California, the Midwest, and other intermountain states.
  • Teachers who are new to the school are evaluated at least twice a year for three years. Career educators are evaluated once every three years.
  • Classes are provided to meet the needs of students with differing academic abilities. Basic, regular and honors courses are offered in English, math, science and social studies.
  • Advanced placement courses for college credit are available in U.S. history, English, biology, chemistry, math, computer studies, physics, foreign language and music. Concurrent enrollment classes are also available for college credit.
  • Vocational offerings include foods, parenting/child development, marketing, office training, woods, drafting, electronics, auto mechanics and body repair, and commercial art. Most areas provide job entry training.
  • Current programs serve students with special educational needs.
  • Technology training is provided with personal computers, CAD, robotics, and computer graphics.
  • Good behavior is valued. Students are expected to conform to school standards of conduct, to obey all laws, treat the building with respect, and create an atmosphere conducive to good learning.
  • Students must follow the District dress code which essentially requires that they dress for school in modest, appropriate clothing.
  • An on-campus cafeteria serves more than one-third of the student body daily.
  • Bus service is provided for all students who live two miles or more away from school.
  • School visitors are always welcome. Visitors should check in at the office as they arrive. (Students from other local schools are asked not to visit during the regular school day.)
  • Our Peer Leadership Team actively promotes a drug-free school environment.
  • Our athletic teams, drama team, forensics, and vocational competitors are consistently among the top region and state contenders.
  • Our school has produced several National Merit Scholar award recipients, finalists and semifinalists as well as Utah State Sterling Scholar finalists.
  • Our athletes are consistently named to All-State Academic and All-State Athletic teams.
  • Several on our staff have received District and state recognition for outstanding classroom teaching.
  • Our PTA and booster clubs give patrons the chance to become involved and lend support to our programs and activities. Volunteers annually contribute thousands of hours of service to our school.
  • Our School Community Group meets regularly to give input on vital school issues.
