About Fort Herriman Middle

RattlesnakeFort Herriman Middle School serves students of varied economic, social, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Located in one of the fastest growing areas of the Salt Lake Valley, in the city of Herriman, the school's spacious building and well-groomed campus are assets to the community. Fort Herriman Middle is a modern two-story design featuring self-contained classrooms located around a central meeting area designed for cooperative learning, Futuristic Technology Lab, Prototype Shop, Foods Lab, Sewing Lab, Business Computer Lab, Vocal and Instrumental Music rooms, Library/Media Center, Auditorium, Gymnasium with a second level indoor track, Dance Studio, Fitness Room, and office suite. The show-case middle school was completed in the summer of 2005 and offers many amenities not included in Jordan District's older middle schools such as a full wireless network, state-of-the-art multimedia presentation stations in every classroom, a wireless microphone system for each teacher, seven electronic whiteboards, three, 40 laptop mobile computer labs, and five, 40 station desktop computer labs. The Fort Herriman faculty is highly respected for the standards of excellence that the school maintains and for the respect and courtesy that are extended to all.  Fort Herriman Middle has adopted and works toward a professional learning communities model with student learning as its primary focus.  Interdisciplinary teaming allows teachers to meet the needs of individual students.  We stress character development, continuous learning, critical thinking and communication at Fort Herriman.  Fort Herriman Middle has been recognized by the National Council PTSA for its efforts to increase parental involvement in the school.  Fort Herriman has also just completed its accreditation process receiving the highest performance review allowed by the Utah State Office of Education.

Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula.   Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests
The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies.  The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8.  The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6.  Results are reported as the average percentile rank.  The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.

Direct Writing Assessment (DWA)
The Direct Writing Assessment (DWA) is designed to assess the writing skills of 6th and 9th grade students in February and March each year.  The following six components of writing are assessed: ideas & content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.
