West Jordan Middle School serves students of varied economic, social, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Located in the city of West Jordan, the school’s spacious building and well-groomed campus are assets to the community. West Jordan Middle School is a traditional two-story design featuring self-contained classrooms, shop and home economic areas, choral and band rooms, media center, auditorium, gymnasium, office suite, and swimming pool. The building dates from 1955 and offers many amenities not included in Jordan District’s new middle schools.
West Jordan Middle School provides a positive learning environment where students have every opportunity to achieve their academic potential without regard to race, sex, or religious preference. The West Jordan Middle School faculty is highly respected for the standard of excellence that the school maintains and for their school wide expectations of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and SAFETY.

- The school serves 1,082 Students
- Students attend school on a regular nine-month, 180-day calendar with the summers off. The students’ day begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 2:50 p.m.
- West Jordan Middle School is one of three Jordan District schools to have been awarded Wednesdays as Collaborative Day. Most Wednesdays (consult the school calendar) school is dismissed at 1:25 p.m. Teachers will collaborate as interdisciplinary teams, grade-level teams, and departments in planning and preparing the very best curriculum to meet student needs.
- The curriculum meets or exceeds district and state core curriculum standards and includes a wide range of required and elective courses.
- The pupil/teacher ratio is 1 to 26.30 in grades 7 and 8 and 1 to 27.00 in grade 9. However, the actual class size may vary.
- The 56-member faculty includes a mix of veteran and new educators. All are state certificated and well prepared in their fields. Both teachers and administrators undergo formal evaluations on a regular basis.
- A full resource team, school psychologist, counselors, and teachers are on staff to serve students with special needs.
- Selected 9th grade honors classes are available to students who qualify through class performance and high scores on standardized achievement tests.
- Computer Science classes and a specially equipped technology classroom provide students with opportunities for technology education.
- West Jordan Middle School has 3 computer-equipped labs to assist students learning keyboarding, computer technology, research, and writing skills. In addition, Intel has provided a mobile lab for the areas of math and science.
- Students have access to a lovely Media Center.
- Students are expected to comply with the Jordan School District Dress Code.
- Students are expected to attend classes regularly. A computer tracking system helps monitor attendance. Staff members work closely to ensure regular attendance patterns.
- Character and excellence programs encourage students to do their best by rewarding academic achievement, good citizenship, exemplary attitudes, exceptional effort, and improvement.
- West Jordan Middle School participates in UBI. UBI is a set of personal development activities sponsored by the Utah Personal Development Center. The goal of this initiative is to improve overall school climate and make our school safer.
- Nutritious breakfasts (.90) and hot lunches (l.75) are served daily.
- Most West Jordan Middle School students live within walking distance; bus service is provided for any student who lives two miles or more from the school.
- School volunteers are an important asset to the school. The Parent-Teacher-Student Association is a vital part of West Jordan Middle School. Volunteerism is encouraged. The school has an active School Community Council.
- Visitors are always welcome and asked to stop by the office for a visitor’s pass before going to classes or moving through the building.
- Parents and students have 24-hour access to current grades and attendance with the school’s online PowerSchool program. We have a West Jordan Middle School web site that is continually updated with information on school events, newsletters, calendars, teachers’ individual web pages, and links to faculty e-mail addresses.
- Our school-wide excellence program and computerized discipline program assure recognition for exemplary students and immediate help for students experiencing problems.
- School visitors often comment on the high standards of courtesy and respect they encounter at West Jordan Middle School.
Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT)
The Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) are administered at the end of each school year to help assess how well students have mastered the standards and objectives set forth in the State of Utah Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science core curricula. Student achievement is reported as the percent of students reaching “proficient” by earning a Level 3 or Level 4 performance on the Core CRT.

IOWA Tests
The IOWA Test of Basic Skills provides a comparison of achievement to students across the United States in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies. The IOWA test is given each fall to students in grades 3, 5, and 8. The Jordan School District School also administers the IOWA to students in grade 6. Results are reported as the average percentile rank. The national average is the 50th percentile in each area.

Direct Writing Assessment (DWA)
The Direct Writing Assessment (DWA) is designed to assess the writing skills of 6th and 9th grade students in February and March each year. The following six components of writing are assessed: ideas & content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.
